Bluebells in Snowdonia

Most of these locations are within a half hour drive of Cadair View Lodge

Castell y Bere Distinctive remains of a native Welsh castle, probably begun by Prince Llewelyn ab Iorwerth (‘the Great’) around 1221.   From A487 Dolgellau to Corris road take right hand turn to Minffordd B4405.  Follow road to Abergynolwyn.  Take right turn after church in middle of village towards Caerberllan.  At crossroads by telephone box turn right.  Free entry.  More information
Crawcwellt An Iron Age settlement about 2 miles south of Trawsfynydd.  From A470 heading towards Trawsfynydd take turning before Trawsfynydd (usually large wheelie bins standing at junction).  After about 1 mile take left fork.  After about another mile settlement is on the left.  More Information
Criccieth Perched above Criccieth town, the castle is still dominated by the twin-towered gatehouse built by Prince Llywelyn ab Iorwerth (‘the Great’). Extended by Llywelyn ap Gruffudd (‘the Last’), and later remodelled by Edward I and Edward II. Site exhibition and audio-visual presentation.  See leaflet at Cadair View Lodge.  More information
Cymer Abbey Not quite a castle but still an ancient monument.  Ruins of 12th century Cistercian Abbey located at Llanelltyd on the A470 near Dolgellau.
Dolbadarn At Llanberis.  Probably built by Llywelyn ab Iorwerth (‘the Great’) early in the 13th century, the castle is dominated by a massive round-towered keep, still standing up to 50 feet high.  Excellent views down the valley.  Free entry.  More Information
Dolwyddelan A square stone keep, dating from the 13th century, remains of this castle built by Llywelyn ab Iorwerth (‘the Great’). The site was remodelled by King Edward I.  Site exhibition.  More information
Harlech A World Heritage Site.  Built between 1283 and 1289 by Master James of St George for King Edward I. The castle is designed on a concentric plan with a small but powerful inner ward with an imposing gatehouse and four round corner towers.  Seized by Owain Glyn Dwr in 1404 and held successfully by him for four years.  Site exhibition.  More Information
Tomen y Mur A Roman Fort and site of a Norman Castle.  About 3 miles north of Trawsfynydd.  On A470 heading towards Porthmadog.  Take minor turn on the right about 1 mile after Power Station entrance.  Follow road under railway bridge and up hill.  After about 1 mile enter car park and follow signs.  More information
