THE Pink Heifer does exist. It is the ultimate ride at Coed-y-Brenin. In fact it is one mother of a scary adrenalin fuelled 4 hour ride. Utilising some of the best sections of the MBR and the Karrimor trails, it is the 'off piste' elements that are not way marked, that make THE Pink Heifer what it is. This is a ride only for experienced Mountain Bikers with decent kit. MTB Britain's (Mtbbritain.co.uk) write-up on THE Pink Heifer is simply titled 'Pink Heifer - Certain Death'. If you are inexperienced or of a nervous disposition....stay away and enjoy the the official routes. Some of the highlights include: The Edge: - almost invisible from the road, this section starts with a hidden steep grassy descent down the hillside. As it gets steeper out of your left eye in peripheral vision you quickly notice your rear wheel trying overtake the front as you frantically try and scrub some speed off your descent. If you are still onboard you suddenly veer to the right into a dark tunnel of tree foliage as you speed through to begin a terrifying narrow descent running along a thin ledge with the Edge, a massive void and drop into forest, waiting to claim another victim on your left. This demands intense concentration as you do not want to fall here. The infamous PlungePool descent: - taking a thin grassy path off of a larger way marked forest path, you find yourself slipping and sliding down a steep narrow path towards the thunder of a waterfall. Curving to the right along the crest of a long drop the descent gets even steeper. Suddenly you are aware of a hairpin approaching. If you do not make this hairpin you will find yourself dropping 150 feet into cauldron of white water at the base of the waterfall - your next ride will start from the Pearly Gates. Somehow you do manage to get around only to find the path steepens and you rush down to a second hairpin which you MUST make. You get around and hurtle down to a bridge which crosses the roaring waters below. Admire the beauty of this place as your heart rate gradually returns sub 200 bpm. Ant Trail descent : - another exhilarating narrow forest descent , similar to the EDGE, but at even greater speed if that were possible. With thin paths and a painful drop into an abyss off to the left, this demands some more of your concentration. The descent peters out and you then ascend up to at a huge fallen tree. Down to your left you can see the road. It is a drop of 100 feet. You also know the road is where you need to be. You look around wondering how to reach it. Then....realisation......you suddenly see the disturbed earth on your left. You are meant to just ride off the path and down avoiding a couple of large trees in the process. Surely this isn't possible......that slope is just too steep to ride down.......but you know you have to try.....you get your weight off the seat and over the back of the bike......you release the brakes, shut your eyes and pray. The first time you do THE Pink Heifer the high lasts for days. It must rank as THE ride in the UK. We can provide way marked route maps for THE Pink Heifer when you stay with us. Still not enough? Then try THE Green Heifer. This tops and tails THE Pink Heifer with the Rhinog Vista run extending the ride to a massive 6 hours. This is the ultimate long ride and we guarantee that you will have earned those beers you have left in the cabin's fridge. You will find more information about THE Pink Heifer on Gareth's superb MTB site, including some video clips (one being the plungepool descent) on www.mtbbritain.co.uk. ****** Coming soon THE Black Heifer ******* Take the hardest sections of THE Pink Heifer.
