Most of these railways are within a half hour drive of Cadair View Lodge.

 

Are you interested in steam trains?  Buy a discount ticket from The Great Little Trains of Wales website and get a 20% discount off journeys on Welsh Highland Railway, Llanberis Lake Railway, Ffestiniog Railway, Talyllyn Railway, Bala Lake Railway, Vale of Rheidol Railway and Welshpool and Llanfair Railway all of which are within an hour's drive of Cadair View Lodge.  Discount cards cost £10 and are valid for 12 months.

 

Bala Lake Railway Journey along the shores of Wales' largest natural lake. The return trip from Lanuchllyn to Bala takes about an hour.  You can break your journey at intermediate stations perhaps for a lakeside picnic.  Child goes free voucher available at Cadair View Lodge.  See leaflet at Cadair View Lodge.  More information
Cambrian Coast Line A spectacular journey along the coast from Pwllheli to Aberystwyth (or further!).  Along the stretch the railway crosses several bridges over wide estuaries, passes castles, golden beaches, bustling harbours and seaside resorts.  Day passes and family tickets available.  See leaflet at Cadair View Lodge.  More information  Steam train service runs on certain days throughout the Summer
Corris Railway Like many of the other narrow-gauge railways in North Wales, Corris railway was built to serve the slate industry.  Corris is unusual in that it has a 2ft 3in gauge.  See leaflet at Cadair View Lodge.  More Information
Fairbourne & Barmouth Steam Trains The Fairbourne & Barmouth Railway runs two and a half miles between  Fairbourne and  Penrhyn Point where it connects with a ferry which takes passengers across the Afon Mawddach to Barmouth.  Along this stretch of track is the station with the longest name in the World as entered in the Guinness Book of Records.

The full round trip takes 60 minutes and all trains are normally steam hauled.   Pay once and you can ride as many times as you want all day!!

Ffestiniog Railway

The line runs from Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog behind one of the world-famous Double Fairlie locomotives.  Journey through a wide variety of scenery much of it in the Snowdonia National Park. The full return trip takes around 2 hours 15 mins.   More information 

This is a very important year in  the history of Welsh Highland Railway and Ffestiniog Railway - it's the year when they will be joined!  In February 2009 the official "joining" will take place in Porthmadog and by the Autumn of 2009 it will be possible to travel, by steam, from Blaenau Ffestiniog all of the way to Caernarfon.  For more information see Bridging The Gap

Llanberis Lake Railway A lakeside trip along the shores of Padarn Lake at the foot of  Snowdon. The return trip takes about 40 minutes.  Again it is possible to break the journey.  More information

Snowdon Mountain Railway Britain's highest railway.  In a tremendously ambitious feat of engineering, and uniquely in Britain, a rack and pinion railway was built which rises to within 66 feet of the summit of the highest mountain in England and Wales.  More information  THERE IS NO SERVICE TO THE SUMMIT OF SNOWDON DURING THE WINTER MONTHS. Talyllyn Railway Pay once and ride all day!  Travelling through beautiful countryside this railway was opened in 1865 and runs from Tywyn on the Mid Wales Coast inland to Nant Gwernol. The return trip takes just over two hours, but with so many scenic places to get off to picnic or walk it is easy be turned into a full day out.   All trains are stream hauled.  Pay once and ride all day.  LICENSED FOR WEDDINGS!  See leaflet at Cadair View Lodge.  More information
Welsh Highland Railway - Caernarfon - Porthmadog In 2010 it should be possible to travel, by steam all the way from Caernarfon to Blaenau Ffestiniog.  Visit the website for the lastest information and details of all of the exciting happenings this year.  More information
