When you think of a gold rush it probably brings the West coast of America to mind. But we had our own #goldrush in the Dolgellau area in the late 1800's? Not just 1 gold mine but 80+ mines!
There are no commercial gold mines here AT THE MOMENT but with the price of gold rising there is always talk of at least one of them opening up again.
It used to be possible to pan for gold in Coed y Brenin (certainly into the 1990s) but this is now illegal. I remember hearing of people who reputedly made quite large sums each summer doing it... but no more.
Several royal wedding rings are made from gold mined at Bontddu (the Queen, Dianna and Kate I think)
Look out for the mining relics when you visit. The Waterfalls & Goldmines walk in Coed y Brenin is a good place to start.
