"Mum... Can we have an ice cream? PLEASE!"
We know that very often it's not the price of accommodation that makes a holiday un-affordable but more what will be spent during the holiday. This is especially true when there are children who need entertaining or who are being tempted by ice creams, attractions and gift shops. In this series of blogs we look at ways to keep the spending down by suggesting things that will help keep what you spend to a reasonable level and things that can be done for FREE.
We know that it's coming and we feel mean when we say "No". BUT when you're on a budget £3.50 or more per head for a cone of something other than vanilla or £2 for a Magnum lolly would blow the budget.
How about these ideas to help please the cravings?
Before you come away on holiday visit your nearest Poundstore, Home&Bargains, B&M, Wilko and buy an ice cream scoop, some plastic sundae dishes (or little tubs) and some small spoons. Put them (and a waterproof bag) in the car or your backpack.
When the demand for an ice cream happens pop into your nearest supermarket and choose a tub of "special" nice flavour ice cream (i.e. NOT vanilla - unless that's what's called for). Maybe take turns to choose the flavour. This might cost £2.50 for a tub so you might decide to "splash out" on some ice cream sauce or wafers.
Outside serve scoops of ice cream in the bowls and even if you have to throw away half of the tub you'll have saved money.
Again, if the demand is for lollies (or Magnums) a multi pack in the supermarket will cost much less than individual items from a street vendor or a small shop.
Might not be the ideal way of doing it but... ice cream is ice cream.
What's the waterproof bag for?
To take the dirty, sticky items back "home" but be washed up before the next trip out.
